Derrick was born and raised on the small island of Guam in West Pacific. Coming from a small island, the closest thing to salsa dancing Derrick had ever experienced was the “Island Cha-Cha,” an upbeat and playful version of the traditional Cha-Cha-Cha. This form of dancing is similar to the traditional Cha-Cha-Cha but requires a little more dip in the hips and a carefree attitude. Derrick’s previous dance experience included Polynesian dancing.
It was at The Grad in Davis, CA with friends where he was first introduced to salsa. Once he started, he was hooked. He moved to California in 2003 to study mechanical engineering at the California Maritime Academy in Vallejo, California. A year later, he was recruited by JC to join his training team. He has been a principal dancer for Afinkao since 2007. Outside of salsa dancing, Derrick enjoys the sights and sounds of traveling and the company of family and friends.
Do it big, do it right, and do it with style.
